How can I check to see if the domain name I want is available?

1. How long does it take?
This depends greatly on the timetable of the client, and also on the type of web site. A small web site with an enthused client can be generated with good quality in about two weeks.

2. How much will it cost me initially?
The cost of a web site is greatly dependent on the content.

Island Design can design your site for as little as $20 per hour.  As a very, very broad estimate to start with, a budget of $500 - $1000 for the first year would be reasonable. This is a starting ballpark number, but beyond this, we prefer to discuss individual projects and then quote more accurate prices. Island Design does not work on generic projects. It is very important to us to maintain high quality standards, and so we strive to treat each project with the respect it deserves.

3. What is the cost per month to host a web site?
We can either host your website on one of our servers or recommend a quality third-party virtual host depending on the specific needs of your site in terms of operating system, sql, scripting languages, etc.. Hosting rates for quality service are currently are as low as $20 / month including all setup and domain name registration fees.  This includes a www.yourcompany.com address, e-mail, and a small- to medium-sized web site. Sites with extensive dynamic content (pages generated on-the-fly from a database, forum, etc. will require more resources once traffic grows.)

4. How involved should I be in the creation of my own web site?
If you already produce your own promotional materials, you might do well to produce your own website.  However, if you don’t have the free time to learn about web design, then you should consider working with a designer who can interpret your ideas and produce a polished product more quickly.

5. Who should maintain & update my site, and what will this cost?
You may choose to maintain your own site after the initial design and formatting is complete.  If you chose this route, Island Design will be available for questions and to offer tips and tricks to maintain your site.

Or you may choose to have Island Design update your site on the basis of your choosing.  The cost for this service would vary based upon the type and complexity of updates, but could be quite reasonable.  Update charges would be billed at $20 per hour for graphic and web design.
